Beginning West Coast Swing Class Details

Mary Scanlon beautifully demonstrates west coast swing for the beginning dancer. She teaches step by step footwork, easy combinations, solid partnering technique, and tips for social dancing. You will learn alot in these fun classes.

What is "West Coast Swing"?

West Coast Swing has six and eight count patterns and is danced in a slot. In West Coast Swing the woman does not rock step back as in East Coast swing. She walks forward on count one. West Coast Swing is usually done to medium tempo popular modern music, but when you become good at it, West Coast Swing can can be danced to faster tempo music as well. This dance has no bounce and a very smooth feel. The UCWDC describes West Coast Swing as a "smooth, stationary dance with slotted patterns and rhythm accents, emphasizing back-beat." It's one of the main dances we'll be doing on our February 2018 cruise to the Mexican Riviera.

If you have the option- stay away from tennis shoes, rubber soles, soles with tread, platform, and flip flop style shoes. Shoes with leather or suede soles will make it easier to dance. Ladies are encouraged to wear practice shoes, or heels. If you wear heels, they should be be no higher than 2.5" and the ankle strap must keep the shoe attached to your foot as you spin. Men do best in comfortable dress shoes with leather soles or dance shoes with suede soles, but all types of shoes will be permitted in the beginning level classes.
